Traveling with your furry loved ones from Canada to the United States is about to get a bit more difficult than it was before. Starting August 1st, there will be new restrictions put in place that may affect your travel plans. Whether you’re moving, visiting family, or planning a vacation, it’s important to understand these new restrictions being placed, to avoid any complications for you and more importantly for your beloved pets.
On July 22, 2024, the United States (U.S.) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced updated import requirements for dogs entering the U.S.. As of August 1, 2024, the CDC has implemented updated import requirements for all dogs travelling to the U.S.
The CDC has different requirements depending on where the dog has been in the 6 months before travelling to the U.S.:
Dogs that have only been in dog-rabies free or low-risk countries (such as Canada, the U.S. and Mexico) in the 6 months before travelling to the U.S. must follow the following criteria:
Here is the list of High Risk Countries for Dog Rabies.
With all these new restrictions taking place, it is more important than ever to make sure you're planning for any trips to the U.S. Microchip your pet if not already done, gather all required documentation, and make copies to have on hand during your journey.
These new regulations may appear challenging, but their goal is to safeguard both people and pet health and safety. A smooth travel experience and the prevention of disease transmission are ensured when your pet is in good health and has the necessary documentation. If you need any further information make sure to visit the Government of Canada website as they have more information on the matter. Safe travels and happy adventures to you and your furry friend!
